Severe hypothyroidism is called miksedema. The causes are most commonly found is thyroiditis

Hashimoto. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is often enlarged, and hypothyroidism occurred several months later by the destruction of the gland is still functioning. The second is the commonest cause of treatment of hyperthyroidism.

Either radioactive iodine or surgery tends to cause hypothyroidism. Long-term iodine deficiency in the food, causing enlargement underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism goitrosa). Long-term iodine deficiency is a common cause of hypothyroidism in underdeveloped countries.

Here are some causes of Hipotirodisme:

1. Autoimmune diseases. In this condition, the body attacks the thyroid gland due to him as foreign cells eventually die cells in the thyroid gland and can not produce thyroid hormone. The cause is unknown, but descended in the family and often associated with other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes,  Sjögren’s syndrome.

2. Thyroid tissue loss. Usually occurs secondary to irradiation (radiation) or thyroid gland surgery is performed as a treatment for hyperthyroidism.

3. Cogenital abnormalities are babies born without a thyroid gland or thyroid gland does not function normally. Consumption of medicines, for example, lithium is often used for the treatment of mood disorders.

While hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland to work excessively, resulting in a large number of thyroid hormone.

Hyperthyroidism can be found in the form of Graves’ disease, toxic goiter or hyperthyroidism noduler secondary.

The cause of hyperthyroidism:

* Disease grave, which is an autoimmune disease. The body attacks the thyroid gland cells but instead turn off the cell, what happens is that it appears antibodies stimulate the thyroid gland to produce excessive hormones. One of its characteristics is the protruding eyeball.

* Adenomas (glandular tumor), thyroid toxicity, which occurs when part of the thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone itself without stimulated by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). This is usually experienced by patients with goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) long term, especially the elderly.

* Thyroiditis, which is inflammation of the thyroid gland that cause excessive hormone production. This inflammation can cause the hyperthyroidism that lasts for several weeks.

* Adenomas (glandular tumor) in the form of pituitary tumors in the pituitary gland that causes excess production of TSH that stimulate the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones become too excessive.

You Snoring? Beware of Heart Disease Risk http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/you-snoring-beware-of-heart-disease-risk.htm http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/you-snoring-beware-of-heart-disease-risk.htm#comments Wed, 21 Apr 2010 12:33:12 +0000 admin http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/?p=292 If you frequently snore and feel sleepy during the day, you may experience a condition called impaired snoring or “sleep apnea”. Although this may also be side effects of a disease such as asthma and diabetes, sleep apnea is often not diagnosed as “a hidden epidemic.”

What exactly is snoring or sleep apnea disorder (OSA / Obstructive Sleep Apnea)?
Generally, the muscles that control the tongue and soft tissue palate will keep the airway stays open during sleep. If the muscles are too relaxed, the breathing passages become narrow and this resulted in people snore. If the airway is narrowed, it will cause difficulty in breathing. Sometimes, the respiratory tract to be closed at all so the person stops breathing or has become what is called a “disturbance of sleep apnea.” This can last for ten seconds or more. This can happen many times can even be hundreds of times during sleep.

Strange but true http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/strange-but-true.htm http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/strange-but-true.htm#comments Mon, 22 Feb 2010 18:35:33 +0000 admin http://lateafternoonofthelivingdead.com/?p=116 Over the years, we all grow used to headlines that capture the imagination like, “Sticky Buns kill 31 in China” or “Two British ships collide, one dies”. Somehow the English language is capable of creating dramatic images in just a few words, converting a simple story of food poisoning into an epic movie where killer buns rampage through a crowded mall until brought down by Chinese kung fu warriors. But, every now and then, the story is both extraordinary and literally true. “College girl avoids loss of all her limbs”. Medicine is still a fairly inexact science. We all know the names of the big diseases and that there are treatments for many of them. But whether patients get the right diagnosis in time for the treatment to work. Well, that is a different story. Take meningitis as an example. The bacteria responsible live happily in the throats for weeks and months and nothing happens. Then, without warning, something as yet unknown, can trigger them into activity.

The first signs are what seem to be a cold or flu, sometimes with a headache, then developing with fever, vomiting and a rash. But there is no guarantee that these symptoms will appear or in this order. It is often the case that treatment is too late if the rash appears. This is a sign of meningococcemia, a bacterial infection of the blood stream. In some cases, there can be a loss of blood circulation to the hands and feet. At the beginning, they feel cold and, if treatment is delayed, gangrene can set in and there is no choice but to amputate. It is a little like a horror movie. First, surgeons remove the fingers of the affected hand. If that does not stop the spread of the rot, the hand follows, then the arm below the elbow, continuing until there is no arm left. That just leaves the other arm and two legs to go. Amputations occur in between 10 and 20% of cases.

This brings us to Jamie Schanbaum who is a student at the University of Texas in Austin. Early in February, 2009, she felt ill and quickly realised it was something serious. But, instead of going to hospital, she went to bed hoping to sleep it off. This was a crucial loss of time. When she awoke, the bacteria had spread throughout her body. But she has benefited from a new approach to treatment. Patients are placed in an oxygen chamber and given high doses of viagra. Although this drug is most usually associated with the treatment of erectile dysfunction, it works by dilating arteries in certain key areas through out the body. So it has a general effect in improving blood circulation. Changing the air pressure also improves flow. With these two working together, circulation to the affected areas of the arms and legs can be improved and amputations avoided. Years ago, Jamie would have lost all her limbs. Today, comparatively little needs to be removed. Although this is an extreme example of the effectiveness of viagra, it should remind us that it also represents a dramatic way of restoring circulation to the penis and creating hard erections. Different needs are equally well served by this amazing drug.
